The Right Tournament

How Do You Find One?

To find the right tournament for your beginning junior golfer, you need to know that there are basically two types of golf tournaments that you can sign your junior golfer up for: recreational tournaments or game development tournaments.

If your child is just starting out and you a looking for a fun experience, sign them up for the first few times in recreational tournaments. Game development tournaments are very competitive and your beginning tournament golfer may be very intimidated if that is her first exposure.

Check with your golf club to see if they offer any junior tournaments. Many clubs sponsor their own recreational tournaments especially if they have a thriving junior golf instruction program.

Your local community junior golf program, such as Parks and Recreations programs, may also offer recreational tournaments. The instructors there may also be aware of local junior tours that would be appropriate for your child’s level of play.

North County Junior Golf Association Tournament

The tournaments offered by our local junior golf association, North County Junior Golf Association , are fun for junior golfers who are new to tournament golf. NCJGA focuses on making junior golf accessible, affordable, and fun for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels. Check out their website and see if you can find something similar for your beginning golfer.

JuniorLinks.com is the website operated by the USGA. It has tournament information included on the site and also has a very useful Programs Quick Search Tool so that you can find a local junior golf program by city and state.

Find tournament and program information for girls only at the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf website. They provide an opportunity for girls, ages 7 to 17, to learn to play golf, build lasting friendships and experience competition in a fun, supportive environment, preparing them for a lifetime of enjoyment with the game.

If your child loves playing in recreational tournaments and wants to do more, you may want to sign her up for more competitive game development tournaments.

Regional junior golf associations, like the San Diego Junior Golf Association, San Diego Junior Golf Association, are appropriate for junior golfers who can maintain a good scoring average and are looking for opportunities to progress to national events. Many of these regional associations hold qualifying events for national events such as the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship, held every July.

Don’t forget to check with your child’s golf instructor. Most times, they will be aware of junior golf tournaments in the area and which ones would be the right tournament and the most fun for your child.
