Golf Balls

Golf balls for beginners should be solid-piece golf balls. Solid piece balls are very tough, like the balls on the driving range.

Golf balls can be either solid, two-piece, three-piece, four-piece or even five-piece! They can get to be very expensive!

The two-piece balls are a solid center surrounded by a plastic cover. The are very tough, like the solid-piece balls, but can go further with more control.

Three- and four-piece balls have small rubber balls with rubber bands wrapped tightly around it. The outside of the ball is covered with something called balata, which is dried sap from a West Indian tree.

More often we now see versions of synthetic (or fake) balata. Professionals use four- and five-piece balls; they are much softer and are easier to damage while you are playing, but they are also easier to control when the pro “works” the ball.

The dimples on the outside of the golf ball control the flight pattern of the ball. The size and pattern of the dimples are different on different balls. If you have a ball with more dimples on it, it will usually go lower and straighter than golf balls with fewer dimples.

US Kids Golf is a company that makes golf balls especially for kids. Click here to read more about golf balls.
