Golf Rules:
Make Sure Even the Youngest Ones Know How to Play!
Kids love to play games and they love to play by the rules! Knowing golf rules and playing by them is no exception.
Before you take your child out onto the course, you should make sure that they know the basics of etiquette and how to play. Thankfully, the USGA has made teaching your kids golf easier than ever.
You can find the following publications, look up golf rules, and even take fun interactive rules quizzes on their website www.usga.org.
The gold standard USGA publication is the USGA 2008-2009 Rules of Golf. This is published every year and while this handbook is a bit advanced for younger kinds, every golfer should carry one of these in his bag; it may save you strokes! For younger kids, Snoopy and Friends Address the Rules of Golf provides easy to understand versions of some of golf’s most often encountered questions. Golf Rules Junior Flash Cards are an easy to use, fun tool for kids to learn golf etiquette. Also from the USGA is the Rules of Amateur Status for Juniors. The following description comes from their website: This booklet provides juniors with a resource tool for understanding the Rules of Amateur Status. Five Rules most common to juniors are highlighted by short summaries and a question/answer section to help explain how they apply in specific situations. Parents and coaches will also find this booklet helpful. Many golf coaches will also teach you child what he needs to know. Be sure that your child is familiar with the rules, though, before entering in any junior golf competitions as they will be expected to know many of the most common ones.
