Lessons from the Pros:

Make Sure Your Child Has a Good Start

When your child becomes interested in golf, you may want to look into getting him or her lessons so they learn the right technique, etiquette and rules. Great teachers make the game fun for kids and help them to succeed.

When your child is first starting out, you may be tempted to give him lessons yourself. This works for many people, but you and your kid both need to have the right personalities to make it work. If your child is a beginner, this may work fine for a while, but as he moves on and his skills develop, you will want to get him his own coach.

Many teaching pros can be found at both public and private courses. Before hiring a coach, you should go and watch how he teaches a few lessons. It takes a special coach to really be able to work well with kids and some coaches, while they may be great with adults, may not be with kids. If your area has junior golf tournaments, it’s a good idea to check those out to get a referral for a coach.

Golf Coach for Juniors

Many times, a good coach can be found by word-of-mouth, but you may also find that these coaches are very popular (for a reason!) and it may be difficult to get your kid on his schedule. Click here to find out more information on lessons and choosing a golf coach.

The First Tee is an organization that provides free golf instruction to kids that otherwise would not be exposed to the game and its positive values because they can’t afford it. For information about The First Tee, click here.

Many kids start out learning golf by attending a camp in the summer. Local YMCAs usually have golf camps, as do many local Parks and Recreations Departments. Nationally known camps, such as Nike Junior Golf Camps, are very popular. Click here to find out more about camps.

Sticks for Kids Since 1998, the Golf Course Builders Association of America Foundation has taken a special interest in supporting under privileged children with the Sticks for Kids Program, a junior golf outreach program for children who may not have the opportunity to learn and play the game.

The program provides clubs, bags, and instructors for participating courses and teaches kids not only the fundamentals of the game, but also life lessons related to integrity, safety, and etiquette. Click here to find out more information about the Sticks for Kids Program.

As your child progresses through the different learning stages and you are able to get them out on the golf course, you’ll need to make sure they understand the Rules of the Game. When you’re out on the course, it’s a good idea to be a good role model and follow the rules so your kid learns by example. Everyone loves a gimme putt and when you’re just out there having fun you don’t necessarily play a provisional if your ball is a couple of inches out of bounds, but it’s important for your kid to know that if they’re playing in a tournament or for their school, they will have to count every shot. Click here to find out more information about teaching your child the rules of golf.
