Pinehurst Golf:
Home of American Golf
Pinehurst golf courses (and also other courses in the Sandhills, North Carolina area which includes Southern Pines and Aberdeen) rank consistently at the top of the Travel & Leisure Golf and Golf Digest Best Golf Resorts lists. One trip to Pinehurst and you’ll know why it’s called the Home of Golf.
The area has 43 world-class courses all within just a few miles of each other. Most people, when they think of Pinehurst golf, envision champions old and new playing on the Donald Ross designed No. 2 course. It’s truly a treat to play such a course, but there are also plenty of others to choose from and visiting the area makes for a very family friendly vacation.
Pinehurst Resorts has made a commitment to encourage the development of junior golf. They’ve entered into a partnership with US Kids Golf and is the site of the US Kids Golf Teen World Championship and US Kids Golf World Championship held every late July-early August. For two consecutive weeks, the small charming town of Pinehurst is taken over by the best junior golfers in the world and their families.
Pinehurst Resort, along with Mid Pines Golf Course and Pine Needles Golf Course are designated US Kids Golf Family Courses. This means that the course setup accommodates 2 additional sets of tee locations (Blue Level 1 - 1100 yards and Gold Level 2 tees - 1900 yards) so that all family members are able to enjoy their round. Because the forward tees on most golf courses are approximately 2500 yards for 9 holes, they are too long for kids and adult beginners. The courses may provide a special scorecard for these tee locations. Pinehurst Resort also offers parent/child golf instruction with a USKG Instructor.

You can find as many Pinehurst golf packages and accommodation rates as there are golf courses. Stay at the rather upscale Carolina, picturesque Holly Inn or sportsman's lodge-like Manor, which are all a part of the Pinehurst Resort complex or put together a stay and play package from less expensive hotels chains such as Comfort Inn or Holiday Inn Express. Most places will put together a custom golf package for your family, so take some time to figure out which area courses you’d like to play before calling for packages. On a side note, Hacker's Bar and Grill in The Manor is one of our very favorite places to eat in Pinehurst; it's very casual, there's lots of golf on the TVs and the food's really good! If you would like to spend most of your time playing the Pinehurst Resort courses, a good bet for your family may be to stay at the Resort. Along with rooms at the 3 resort hotels, you can stay in a villa or condo (the condos are along Lake Pinehurst and are very nice). If you stay at another location – and there are lots of places to choose from, including resort rooms, motels, bed & breakfasts, condos and villas – you can typically put together a golf package, but you will most likely be paying more to play the 8 Pinehurst Resort courses.
A good place to find accommodations and Pinehurst golf packages is at www.homeofgolf.com, the website for the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen Area of North Carolina.
Pinehurst is also the home of back to back U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open Championships in 2014!
